Current work
This programme brings together research on Sudanese art, aesthetic experience and the ethics of criticism. It provides a home for books, papers and critical essays, tracing how particular investigations develop into further work.
Cultural Authority Beyond the Song, a working paper in progress, extends the inquiry to singers, reverence and artistic hierarchy in Sudan.
The inquiry examines artworks and artistic practices alongside the histories, sources and conditions through which they become available to a critic. Questions of war, displacement and cultural memory remain part of this work, alongside attention to material practice and the aesthetic life of the works themselves.
The Arabic translation of Threads of Sand, Scar & Scripture belongs within this wider programme. Its translator, progress and edition history retain their own record.

Research context
Sudanese art is studied through particular works, practices and histories. War and displacement affect the conditions of making, preservation and access; they do not exhaust the aesthetic life of the work.
Post-Interpretive Criticism informs the programme’s attention to description, witnessing and the limits of a critical account. Each study retains its own argument, sources and qualifications.
Development of the inquiry
Threads of Sand, Scar & Scripture provides an existing published point of departure. Further investigations can extend, test or revise the account developed there. The programme’s outputs remain identifiable as individual works, with their own versions, publication records and citations.
