Doctrine, Foundational Essays & Investigations

Doctrine and foundational essays that articulate and develop the principles, observations, and methods of Post-Interpretive Criticism.

Follow the inquiry

From foundational essays to current research

Doctrine and foundational essays develop the framework of Post-Interpretive Criticism. Art criticism and reflective essays bring it into practice and can prompt further investigation. Research Programmes document questions taken further and the work they produce.

A foundation for continuing inquiry

Foundational essays and doctrine remain part of a continuing body of work. New essays and investigations develop, qualify, test, and extend the questions they raise.

Current investigations have a programme home

Research Programmes sets out the questions, current stages, relevant discussions, and available records.

Outputs stay with the inquiry

Open a programme and use its “On this programme” menu to find its outputs, developments, and public record. A working paper is not a finished publication; released work links onward to the Journal, Dialogues, or Publications.

Against the Compulsive Urge to Interpret

Art today drowns not in silence but in surplus. Walls in galleries sag beneath explanatory texts, catalogues become mausoleums of interpretation, and critics multiply interpretations until the work itself is barely visible.

Principles of Post-Interpretive Criticism: A Study Guide

Post-Interpretive Criticism (PIC) isn’t a methodology one applies to a work. It’s a moral orientation, a shift in how one stands in front of a thing that breathes silence. Before the critic speaks, before the essay is begun, before the language is chosen, there is the moment of approach.

A Philosophical Departure from Post-Criticism

Post-Interpretive Criticism isn’t a style. It's not an attitude. It's not nostalgia. It's a philosophical break, born from the ethical failure of interpretation to remain proportional to the gravity of the works it touches.

A Philosophical Departure from Post-Criticism

This document delineates Post-Interpretive Criticism as a new genre: with its own philosophical ground, its own ethical stance, and its own practical consequences for institutions, curators, critics, and the future of art writing.

Art as Truth: A Treatise

From Plato’s exile of the poets to Nietzsche’s beautiful lies, from Heidegger’s temples to Adorno’s negations, from Wilde’s paradoxes to Sontag’s erotics, art has always been placed on trial. Philosophers defended it or condemned it, but all assumed one premise: that art flirts with falsehood.
