Curatorial micro-study in development · Oindrilla Maity Surai and Dorian Vale
Research question
How can curatorial context make a work accessible without prescribing the account a viewer gives of it?
Programme record
- Programme topic: Curatorial context and interpretation
- Research form: Curatorial micro-study in development
- Responsibility: Oindrilla Maity Surai and Dorian Vale
Current work
The inquiry examines how a curatorial decision shapes access to an artwork and the accounts that follow an encounter. It considers selection, omission, sequence, language, and the authority carried by exhibition texts.
Oindrilla Maity Surai leads the curatorial work and local relationships. Dorian Vale develops comparative documentation and analysis through Museum of One. The study brings their respective contributions into discussion with Post-Interpretive Criticism, including the distinction between context necessary for access and language that directs a viewer towards a settled reading.
The study does not assume that less context is preferable. Historical information, language access, and the conditions in which a work is shown must be considered before comparing alternative framings.

Oindrilla Maity Surai and Dorian Vale
The immediate work concerns the study design and a focused curatorial case. Case selection, consent, attribution, and the scope of any fieldwork remain matters for agreement. No completed participant study or findings are announced here.
Research context
The programme examines PIC in curatorial practice, where providing access and preserving room for further interpretation can place different demands on the same account. The aim is a documented comparison that permits correction and revision.
Oindrilla’s curatorial work includes Beyond the Edge, Kolkata: Erasures and Resistances (January 2024). The exhibition provides a point of reference for the inquiry into curatorial context; the study’s specific case and scope remain to be agreed.
