## Record at a glance

- **Purpose:** Compare documented conditions of artistic production without treating resemblance as proof of influence.
- **Responsibility:** Dorian Vale; maintained by Museum of One.
- **Tool version:** No numbered tool release is specified in the public record.
- **Method reference:** Source-grounded comparison of places and periods, with explicit evidence gaps.
- **Research status:** Comparative research framework; procedure documented.
- **Documentation revised:** 17 October 2026\. This dates the record, not a new tool release.

**Evidence status:** This record presents a heuristic, not a statistical model or proof of historical causation.

Spatiotemporal Comparison is a research framework for comparing the conditions surrounding artistic production across places and periods. It shifts the initial question from what a work means to what can be established about the circumstances in which it was made, circulated, and encountered. The comparison remains accountable to source records rather than a resemblance between images alone.

## What it does

The documented design places two geographical contexts within a shared timeframe. It organizes questions about institutional structures, economic pressures, state policies, circulation, and access. Shared pressures can then be distinguished from local conditions rather than assumed to have the same consequences everywhere.

- **Contextual comparison:** identifies which conditions are genuinely comparable and which require separate historical accounts.
- **Source grounding:** the original design uses linked Google Arts & Culture records as a starting point for inspectable references, not as a complete archive.
- **Explicit gaps:** missing or inaccessible evidence remains identified as a limit rather than supplied through conjecture.

3. 03 / PROCEDURECompare conditions and gaps

Procedure outline, not a report of an executed analysis. Schematic illustrations explain the documented steps; they are not application screenshots, measured profiles or research findings.

## Worked example

**Illustration only.** This constructed example is not a software run, validation result, or report of participant findings.

*Constructed source exercise: City A has a dated exhibition catalogue recording a workshop in 1980\. City B has a dated venue notice recording an exhibition in the same year. Neither supplied record documents contact between the artists.*

- **What is established:** The two dated events are documented within the exercise. A workshop and an exhibition are not equivalent kinds of institutional support.
- **What is missing:** Funding, access, circulation, and contact require their own sources. Silence in the supplied records is not proof that contact never occurred.
- **What can be compared:** Compare the documented opportunities and the limits of each source. Do not turn a shared year or a formal resemblance into a claim of influence.

**What this establishes:** The defensible outcome is a bounded account of documented similarities, differences, and unknowns. The example does not identify real cities or make an empirical art-historical finding.

## Why compare conditions?

Formal similarity does not establish shared intention, influence, or causation. Two works can appear related while belonging to different systems of production and reception. Conversely, similar pressures can produce very different artistic responses. A useful comparison preserves these differences instead of forcing each work into a common explanatory story.

## Why it belongs to Post-Interpretive Criticism

PIC asks a critical account to disclose the grounds on which it claims authority. Here, that demand applies to historical explanation. The framework separates documented circumstances from inferred relationships and keeps the work from becoming a mere illustration of a context. Restraint means neither ignoring history nor allowing historical explanation to exhaust the encounter.

## Scope and limits

The earlier tool description used the language of inevitability and probabilistic comparison. Such claims require evidence beyond a contextual juxtaposition. This research record treats comparison as a heuristic: identifying conditions does not prove that a work was inevitable, establish statistical likelihood, or settle the relative force of intention and circumstance. Archival absence does not demonstrate that an event or relation did not exist.
